Heel pain may develop during growth periods in childhood where the Achilles tendon is pulling at its attachment to the heel bone, causing pain and swelling.
The problem is usually self limiting but can be helped with pads, orthoses in the shoe and/or ice massage.
Heel Lumps and Bumps
Lumps on the backs of the heels may be caused by shoes.
Tendon Pain
The lower part of the Achilles tendon may be subject to inflammation (tendonitis) or to pain where it inserts into the heel bone (calcaneus). These difficulties can be treated with ice, padding or ultrasound.
Pain under the Heel
Plantar Fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia and the plantar ligaments where they insert under the heel bone.
Pain is often worse first thing in the morning, or after sitting down for a while and then getting up! Treatment depends on severity of pain and how long you have had the problem.
